The capital of Tocantins, PALMAS lies just under 1000km north of Brasilia and just over 1200km south of Belem. The town itself, with a population of some 90,000, is inconveniently set back on the banks of the Rio Tocantins, some 150km by minor roads from the main Brasilia-Belem highway BR-153, and to be honest there's little reason in coming here. If you do get stuck in Palmas, the best hotel is the Rio do Sono, ACSUSO 10, conj. 1, Lote 10 (tel & fax 063/215-1733; $50-70), with nice bright rooms and a pool. Slightly cheaper, but also with a pool, is Casa Grande, Av. Joaquim Teotonio Sugurado, ACSUSO 20, conj. 1, Lote 1 (tel & fax 063/215-1813; $35-50).
