Lying 400km north of Palmas, ARAGUAINA is many times larger, but no more attractive a place to stay. It dominates the road network in northern Tocantins, located as it is almost exactly halfway between the Araguaia and Tocantins rivers. If you do end up staying here, perhaps while changing from one bus to another, there are a few possible places to stay . The best, with all-important cool pools, are Tarcisio's Palace, Av. Perimetral 1, Qd. 3, Setor Manoel Gomes, off the BR-153 (tel 063/813-1110, fax 813-1177; $35-50), and Olyntho Estancia, BR-153 Sul, Km 125, Gurupi exit (tel & fax 063/813-1377; $20-35). For restaurants , Maresia's, Rua das Mangueiras 868, has fine fish dishes; Gaucha, on the same street at no. 1246, does good rodizio, and more or less opposite, at no. 1213, Don Fabricio has a solid reputation for traditional regional cooking.
