The Complexo Memorial do Cerrado Pe Pereira (daily 9am-5pm), developed on the site of an old estate some 10km south of the city on the BR-153 towards Sao Paulo, is an interesting museum, model village and eco-centre. The museum is dedicated to the evolution of the planet, with displays on geology, indigenous cultures, and the wildlife and flora of the region's cerrado ecosystem, a unique form of Brazilian savanna. There are also some botanical gardens, a plant nursery which displays and reproduces both common and endangered cerrado plant species, and a fascinating model nineteenth-century cerrado village containing everything from the village shop and church to the bordello - an important public service in most cerrado settlements, which were after all just remote cowboy pit stops. A taxi to the centre should cost around $12.
