The two central shopping centres, the Conjuntos de Diversoes , one on either side of the downtown Rodoviaria, provide proof that human life does exist in Brasilia, and together are the closest the city gets to having a heart. Both stand three storeys high, crammed with all kinds of shops and eating places. Contained in a huge concrete block that's covered with massive product advertisements, the busy northern conjunto is much more upmarket than its neighbour across the way. The flashy jewellery and furniture shops combine with restaurants and fast-food outlets, and unlike the modern shopping centres in other Latin American cities the conjuntos are not just a playground for the rich; everyone seems to frequent the place. The southern conjunto , reached by following the pavement over the top of the Rodoviaria, is rather down at heel in appearance, surrounded by boulevards where striptease joints compete for custom with new evangelical churches, but has a couple of popular outdoor patios where you can find various cafes and bars. Stuck underground between the two giant shopping blocks, the downtown Rodoviaria is also on three levels, and here you'll find more shops, toilets, snack bars and a bus information office. A fifteen-minute walk west of here in the Setor Comercial Norte, the flashy new Brasilia Shopping centre, a towering glass disc half sunk in the ground, is a busy meeting place and packed with classy shops of all kinds. The streets around have in recent years developed into Brazil's version of California's Silicon Valley, the Vale do Silicio , with the arrival of shiny new office blocks housing high-tech global companies such as IBM, Apple, Intel and Microsoft.
