Beyond the central sights

Beyond the central sights, there's little to Brasilia that warrants a longer stay, though there are some low-key city destinations that can fill in the time. Most are dotted along Asa Sul and Lago Sul pensinsula, with the exception of a couple of decent museums. The Museu de Arte de Brasilia (Tues-Sun 2-6pm), which lies east of the Power Complex near the lake in the Setor Hoteis e Turismo Norte, between the Concha Acustica and the presidential residence, Palacio da Alvorada (bus #104 or taxi, $5 return, from the Rodoviaria), has a collection of modern Brazilian art from 1970 to the present day. In Asa Norte (take an L-2 Norte bus), the Museu Etnografico , Av. L-2 Norte 609, Bloco D (Mon-Fri 8am-noon & 2-6pm), contains some excellent archeological, prehistoric and ethnographic exhibits and also specializes in the study and archiving of indigenous music.

On the south side of the city, the nearest sight to the Eixo Monumental is the mock-Gothic Santuario Dom Bosco , Av. W-3 Sul 702 (Mon-Fri 8am-noon & 2-5pm, Sat 8am-noon), named after an Italian priest who, in 1833, had a dream that "between the 15th and 20th parallels, where a lake had formed, a great civilization will be born". It would be churlish not to accept that Brasilia fulfils the prophecy and the Sanctuary, glass-based and blue-tinted, is a suitably modern affair. The crucifix standing above the main altar is over 7m tall and carved from one piece of wood. Fifteen minutes' walk south from here is the very first building inaugurated in Brasilia; built by Oscar Niemeyer and looking like a cross between a nun's wimple and a marquee, the Igreja Nossa Senhora de Fatima (or Igrejinha) lies between superquadras 307 and 308, in front of commercial sectors 107 and 108. Buses marked "W3-Sul" will take you to within walking distance. The same buses will take you to the Espaco Cultural , a venue for international art and photography exhibitions, on the east side of Avenida W-3 Sul at CLS 508; get off at block 708.

Much further south is the city's most visited building, the Templo da Boa Vontade , SGAS 915, Lotes 75/76 (open 24hr daily), an unusual seven-sided pyramid-shaped building, looking rather like a giant concrete tepee. Inaugurated in 1989 by the Legion of Goodwill, this "temple of goodwill" is meant to be a monument to universal solidarity with its architectural features linked to the number of perfection, seven. Covering over 2000 square metres, it rises to a height of 21m, with the world's largest crystal, from Cristalina, at its pinnacle. Inside there's an unusual spiral pavement and a Silence Room on the lower floor, designed as a meditative space.

Over on the Lago Sul peninsula in the sprawling residential district, SHIS (take the "Lago Sul" bus from the Rodoviaria), you'll find the lively Centro Comercial Gilberto Salomao . Particularly active in the evenings, this offers a range of nightclubs, beer gardens and restaurants - and the world's oldest three-in-one (270-degree panorama) screen cinema. Created in 1985, the Jardim Botanico , Setor de Mansoes Dom Bosco, Cj. 12, Lago Sul (Tues-Sun 9am-5pm), isn't really the world leader that it claims to be, but it is a calm and

well-organized retreat nonetheless and gives you the chance to experience the flora and fauna of the sertao at first hand. There's an information centre, a large display of medicinal plants of the region, ecological trails and over forty square kilometres of nature reserve right on the edge of the city. It's a long way out of town, too far to walk, but only about fifteen minutes on bus #147 from the downtown Rodoviaria. The entrance is by Quadra 1, 23, to the side of the Escola Fazendeira.
