The historic but sleepy town of PLANALTINA , 40km east of the city, is a possible, though not compelling day-trip from Brasilia. Like many communities on the Planalto Central, Planaltino was founded by bandeirantes and evolved into a small market town. Nowadays, there are a few unremarkable colonial buildings left in the centre, making it one of the few historic towns in the region. There's also a museum and some good restaurants, but there's a distinct air of small-town tedium here. As soon as it gets dark, the streets empty as the locals settle down to watch the TV soaps behind their shutters.
