Covering forty square kilometres, Lago Paranoa is a man-made recreation area, created by the diversion of three rivers to humidify the dry climate. It's already suffering from an algae problem, but it's the scene of water sports, clubhouses and the Ermida Dom Bosco . This small conical hermitage, sitting alone on the edge of the lake, around 30km from the downtown Rodoviaria, offers fine views over the lake towards the Alvorada Palace, while below the nearby Paranoa dam there are amazing waterfalls during the heavy summer rains. Buses from the Rodoviaria go right around the lake in a couple of hours: #123 and #125 cover the southern half, finishing up in a shanty settlement after crossing the main dam; for the northern end of the lake, take buses #136-1 or #136-2 "Clube do Congresso".
