The main attraction beyond the city limits is Catetinho (daily 9am-5pm), the very first building in Brasilia, and once the residence of Kubitschek. Built on stilts, it was constructed in just ten days in 1956 to receive Kubitschek and his financiers, planners and designers. Luciano Pereira, the present curator, actually helped to build the place. A quaint, mostly timber, construction, it still retains some of the president's furniture and other objects. To reach it, take the bus to Belo Horizonte from the Rodoferroviaria and get off after 27km at Catetinho. Eight kilometres from the city, but in the opposite direction (along the road towards Formosa and Salvador), the Parque Nacional de Brasilia (daily 8am-4pm) is a popular place for picnics amongst the woodlands, with natural springs, swimming pools and baths - take the Estrada to Sobradinho, along the BR-020. Residents of the city flock here in their thousands at weekends, but designated areas have been set aside for the protection of local flora and fauna, and there's an orchid house containing rare species.
