The Veu da Noiva waterfall is on the Rio Maicuru, a couple of hours' drive from Alenquer on a dirt road which eventually leads to Monte Alegre. A taxi will take you as far as it can and you have to walk the last 3km or so, a beautiful stroll down a forested valley with occasional glimpses of river, before the path drops down right in front of the magnificent waterfall, over 6m high and about 45m wide. The waterfall cascades into a glade in the forest with deep pools of deliciously cool water to swim in. Below the falls you can wade with care through shallow rapids, but watch your step on the sharp-edged rocks. It's an idyllic spot and well worth the effort involved getting here. You will need to take everything for the day with you, including lunch for yourself and your taxi driver (who will wait for you at the end of the road), some water (don't drink the river water no matter how clear it looks), and, most importantly, a note from the owner of the private land on which the waterfall is located - who happens to be a relative of Dona Maria at the hotel, hence the advantage of arranging the trip through her. Without a note, the watchman on the estate won't let you in.
