RUCACHOROI is the centre of the Aigo Mapuche community, and with a population of around 700 it is one of the most important in Argentina. This is a farming settlement strung out for several kilometres on either side of the RP18, with little in the way of a real centre, and not much of a definite beginning or end. Its western farmsteads lie within the park boundaries. Bordering the region to the south is the Cordon Rucachoroi , with peaks over 2100m. A trail leads from behind the guardaparque post here to Quillen, but it's not advisable to try it outside the summer season (Dec-March) as snow can render the path invisible in places. Consult the guardaparque about conditions, and ask him or her to draw a sketch map. Rucachoroi's only shop lies 5km east of the guardaparque post and sells succulent home-made chorizos that are ideal for barbecuing. Nearby is an outlet selling artesania made by the locals. There is no accommodation in town, but you can camp near the lake. To get here, other than on foot, you'll need to hitch, or catch a taxi from Alumine (tel 02942/496398 or 496179; $25).
