ANDACOLLO itself is a dusty mining-town set by the silty Rio Neuquen, in a rugged bowl of infertile beige mountains. It acts as a base for adventurous trips into the cordillera to the north and west, but you'll need your own transport. Its sister town of HUINGAN-CO is 5km away, in a fold of the mountains at the foot of the dramatic Cordillera del Viento , a range that is both higher at this point (almost 3000m) and older than the parallel Andes. Huingan-Co is characterized by its plantations of pines, so it's perhaps not surprising to find a tiny museum dedicated to trees, the Museo del Arbol y de la Madera (Mon-Fri 8am-4pm; tel 02948/499059), run by Sr Isidro Belver, a man with infectious enthusiasm for, and an encyclopedic knowledge of, the area. The museum's collection of cross-slices of different regional trees includes one from a cypress felled by wind in nearby Canada Molina that is more than 1200 years old. The bus from Chos Malal drops you by the YPF fuel station in Andacollo at Valvarco and Nahueve, outside Hosteria La Secuoya , (tel & fax 02948/494007; ordonezc@neunet.com.ar ; $30-45), which has good, fresh rooms, but is usually full. In fact, there's very little accommodation in Andacollo, so if you're planning on staying here it's best to book in advance. The good municipal campsite (tel 02948/494050; $2 per person; closed April-Nov) is 1km past the village, just after the bridge over the Rio Neuquen (the bus heading from Chos Malal to Las Ovejas will drop you here). The site has a swimming pool and a shop.
