The wild and arid region of northern Neuquen is an area that few foreign tourists ever visit. The top destination here is the area around Volcan Copahue , with its twin resorts of Caviahue and Copahue . The volcanic hot springs here are overrated, but walks amongst stands of araucaria to spectacular cascades are certainly not. Further north, the scenery around the market town of Chos Malal becomes more reminiscent of the Cuyo and Mendoza than Patagonia. Exploring the mountainous area around Andacollo to the west of here is not easy, even if you have your own transport (a 4WD is recommended). Roads are very dusty, and if driving, watch out for livestock on the roads, particularly herds of the ubiquitous, long-haired angora goats .
