El Bolson , to the south of Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, is a useful tourist centre with plenty of trekking opportunities in the neighbourhood. It also acts as the main access point for several attractions just across the provincial border in Chubut: the small Parque Nacional Lago Puelo , the Trochita steam train at El Maiten; and two minor settlements close to the mountains - Epuyen , and Cholila , once home to Butch Cassidy. The 123-kilometre drive along the RN258 from Bariloche to El Bolson should be done during the day for its excellent views. There are two routes from El Bolson to Esquel: the normal, faster route is the along the sealed RN258 and RN40; the more scenic route is via Cholila and passes through the north of the Parque Nacional Los Alerces.
