Central and eastern Neuquen Province is a zone most visitors travel through fairly fast on journeys through to the cordillera or the coast. It is an area of desertified meseta and steppe, cultivated in places along the river systems of the Limay and Neuquen. Its wealth lies primarily in energy production: this region has the most important reserves of natural gas and petroleum in the country, and is also Argentina's major exporter of thermal and especially hydroelectric energy, with massive reservoirs such as Pichi Picun Leufu, Ramon Mexia and Chocon forming much of its southern border with Rio Negro Province. Though you won't want to tarry long, there are several points of interest that make worthwhile stopping points, most of which relate to dinosaurs. Both the bustling provincial capital, Neuquen , and the village of El Chocon have world-class paleontology exhibits in their museums, and the latter has some truly remarkable dinosaur footprints in situ by the lake. For wildlife lovers, the highlight is the Parque Nacional Laguna Blanca , a shallow lake in the meseta near Zapala that is renowned for its waterfowl.
