Bisected by the Avenida Rivadavia, itself flanked by high-rise blocks, the west of Buenos Aires is a vast, mostly residential area spreading out for some ten kilometres towards Avenida General Paz to the west. To the north, the barrio of Chacarita is best known for its eponymous cemetery where Juan Domingo Peron and Carlos Gardel are buried. The central barrio of Caballito is a mix of high-rise residential blocks and pretty cobbled streets: it's not a major tourist attraction but makes a pleasant half-day trip on weekends, both for the tranvia historico (historic tramway) which runs through its prettiest section and for the popular book and record market held in the barrio's central park, Parque Rivadavia. West of Caballito, Avenida Rivadavia heads out towards the suburbs through the barrio of Flores , a largely modernized neighbourhood but with a sprinkling of quintas dating from its patrician past. The main reason to head beyond Flores is for the hugely enjoyable gaucho fair, the Feria de Mataderos , held on Sundays in the barrio of the same name and one of the best days out in the city.
