For all its parks and tree-lined avenues, Buenos Aires is a predominantly urban place, as you'd expect of one of the world's biggest cities, and you might like to get away from the hectic ferment for a day or two. The northern suburbs of Vicente Lopez, Olivos and San Isidro have clung to their villagey character, and are less than forty minutes away from central Buenos Aires by train, rather more by bus. Further north, the subtropical islets, steamy swamps and traditional stilted houses of the Parana Delta could not be a more radical change from the capital - it's as if the Everglades extended just beyond the Statue of Liberty. This intriguing landscape, lending itself to water-related activities such as kayaking and water-skiing, is right next to Tigre , a riverside resort with a lot of historical associations and a colourful fruit market, only 30km north of central Buenos Aires. It's served by regular train and bus services, but a great way to visit both the northern suburbs and Tigre is by the scenic Tren de la Costa , which links Olivos to the Parque de la Costa , a popular theme-park. Tigre's also the departure point for launches to Isla Martin Garcia , a sparsely populated island at the mouth of the Rio Uruguay, once a political penal colony but now a nature reserve. The beautifully preserved Uruguayan town of Colonia del Sacramento , a former Portuguese colony and a short ferry-ride across the River Plate from Buenos Aires, is another popular day-trip destination. However, like Tigre, it really deserves an overnight stay at least, if you're to enjoy its laid-back atmosphere to the full.
