Essentially a private museum of ephemera and the rituals of provincial Argentine life, El Recreo is a carefully restored almacen and bar located just outside Chivilcoy, along the unsealed Avenida de la Tradicion (formerly the Camino Real). The museum contains an enormous collection of old adverts, bottles and siphons, cigarette packets and matches as well as oddities such as a bottle casing made from a cow's udder. The museum's charm, however, lies less in its collection of objects than in the way the whole place has been put together to recreate a humble yet absolutely characteristic piece of Argentina's past. Surrounding El Recreo, there's a beautifully tended garden with a huge palm tree, roses and pomegranates and a stableyard, still in use. To gain access to the museum you'll need to arrange an appointment with the owner, Pampa Cura, who runs a leather and silverware shop on Pellegrini 75 (tel 02346/422319) in the town centre. Entry is free, though contributions to the museum's upkeep are welcomed.
