Heading southwest from Buenos Aires , towards La Pampa Province and Patagonia, the RN5 cuts through a swathe of pampa - some of Argentina's richest farmland, though generally of little interest to the tourist. You could quite comfortably head southwest without stopping at all, though there are three towns within the first 160km that could be treated as either brief stopovers or, in the case of the first two, as day-trips from Buenos Aires. At the very beginning of the RN5, Lujan , 68km west of the capital, is Argentina's most important religious site, thanks to its vast basilica, built to house the country's patron saint, the Virgin of Lujan. Some 30km southwest, Mercedes stands out thanks to its attractive town centre and authentic pulperia, largely untouched since the nineteenth century. Chivilcoy , an otherwise unremarkable agricultural town another 60km along the RN5, is worth visiting for its charming traditionalist museum, El Recreo. Beyond Chivilcoy, you'd be pushed to find much of interest in the rather dreary agricultural towns along the RN5, though if you do find yourself stuck, all of them offer a handful of hotels and restaurants.
