Beyond Mar del Plata, the coast slopes round to the west and resorts are more widely spaced. The largest of these southern beach resorts is Necochea , favoured by families and with the region's widest beaches. Neighbouring Quequen , bereft of hotels but with a couple of campsites, offers quieter beaches and is also an important port. Some 140km further south lies the small town of Claromeco , separated by a small stream from the quiet wooded village of Dunamar . This area soaks up most of the tourism from southern Buenos Aires Province and - with the exception of ever so slightly snooty Claromeco - the resorts here have an unpretentious and relaxed feel. As ever, fishing is a popular activity on these beaches, and Necochea, which claims to have some of the best waves in Argentina, makes a good destination for surfers . The area is also an important cereal-producing region and away from the coast vast fields of sunflower, wheat and linseed mirror the immensity of the pampa sky, while grain elevators cluster around the edge of towns. There is no direct coast road linking Necochea with Claromeco; if you want to travel between the two resorts you'll have to make a detour inland via the agricultural town of Tres Arroyos , from where buses run to both places.
