A more interesting choice than Miramar if you want a complete break from the bustle of places like Mar del Plata is tiny MAR DEL SUD , 16km south of Miramar on the RP11. One of Argentina's least-developed beach resorts, Mar del Sud's chief attraction is its tranquil - to the point of soporific - atmosphere. Its beaches are far less frequented than those further north and, if you venture north or south of the small clutch of beachgoers grouped around the bottom of the grandly named Avenida 100, you won't have much trouble finding a stretch of beach to yourself. The town's pleasantly unassuming buildings are dominated by the crumbling faded-pink and ochre walls and steeply pitched roof of the Boulevard Atlantic Hotel , an elegant, French-influenced construction built in 1886. Away from the beach and the handful of hotels and restaurants, there's not much to the town apart from a few sandy roads flanked by telegraph poles, a favourite perch of sleepy owls. Mar del Sud is reached via a local bus from Miramar, which leaves roughly every hour and a half from outside the Rapido del Sud terminal. The bus will drop you at any point in Mar del Sud before terminating at the bottom of Avenida 100. Accommodation is limited, but pleasant. Though the main section of the badly damaged Boulevard Atlantic is currently uninhabitable, there are some slightly musty but well-equipped apartments ajoining the hotel, with cooking facilities (tel & fax 02291/491198; $7 per person). The only hotel on the seafront itself is the Hosteria Villa del Mar on the corner of Av. 100 (tel 02291/491141; $30-45; closed Feb-Nov), which has small rooms overlooking the sea. Friendly Posada Miko , at calles 15 and 98 (tel 011/4752-6006; $20-30), is located two blocks from the beach and has comfortable, simple rooms. Campsite La Ponderosa , 400 metres from the beach and well to the west of the town centre, on the corner of Avenida La Playa (tel 0223/4748759), is well equipped, with showers, a restaurant and shops. The town's few places to eat , including Croat restaurant Makarska , are mostly around the bottom of Avenida 100.
