Plaza San Martin , Mar del Plata's spacious central square, covers four blocks and is bounded by calles San Martin, 25 de Mayo, H. Yrigoyen and San Luis. The square's central statue of San Martin, executed by the sculptor Luis Perlotti, is slightly unusual in that it shows the general in old age. At the southern end of the square is the Catedral de los Santos Pedro y Cecilia (free guided tours Wed at 11am; meet at Mitre 1780), designed by Pedro Benoit, chief architect of the provincial capital La Plata. A fairly unremarkable example of late nineteenth-century neo-Gothic, the exterior is not particularly eye-catching, but it's worth taking a quick spin round the interior for its beautiful and decorative stained-glass windows. A lively feria artesanal takes place in the square in the evening. To the immediate south of the square lies the hectic microcentro , dominated by pedestrianized Calle San Martin , which becomes a claustrophobe's nightmare in the evening when it is so packed that it becomes difficult to weave your way through the assembled mass of holidaymakers and street performers. Alternatively, follow Avenida Luro eight blocks northwest of Plaza San Martin to reach Plaza Rocha where, during the summer, there is a small flea market (Thurs-Sun 6-10pm) specializing in antiques, secondhand books, coins and stamps.
