Just to the southeast of Playa Bristol, the wide Avenida Colon begins to climb to the hill known as Loma Stella Maris . The area provides some good views over the city, particularly from the crest of the hill back down the impeccably straight Avenida Colon. It's also a pleasant place to wander around, if you're interested in Mar del Plata's pintoresco architecture - most of the major examples are in this neighbourhood. At Colon 1189, the imposing Villa Ortiz Basualdo, an exhuberantly turreted and half-timbered Anglo-Norman mansion, houses the Museo Municipal de Arte Juan Carlos Castagnino (Dec-March Mon, Tues & Thurs-Sun 5-10pm; April-Nov same days 4-9pm; $1). Local artist Castagnino, whose work forms the basis of the permanent collection, was born in Parque Camet in 1908 and painted colourful expressionist scenes of Mar del Plata, but it was with his illustrations for a bestselling version of Martin Fierro , published by Eudeba in 1962, that he struck commercial success. The museum is also notable for its elegant Art Nouveau interior, complete with the odd light-hearted detail such as the five extravagant flying ducks over the fireplace, and designed by the Belgian Art Nouveau designer Gustave Serrurier-Bovy. Serrurier-Bovy was a contemporary of Henry Van de Velde and much of his work in Europe was destroyed during World War II: the villa's collection is one of the most complete still remaining. Temporary exhibitions generally focus on local and national artists. Three blocks south of the museum, you can climb to the top of the bizarre, castle-like Torre Tanque , Falucho 995, an Anglo-Norman tower housing offices, from where there are great views over the city (Mon-Fri hourly 10am-1pm).
