Some 20km northeast of San Clemente lies the southern end of the Bahia Samborombon , an immense bay bordered by protected wetlands. Visited by over one hundred and ninety species of migrating birds on their epic journeys between North America and Patagonia, the bay's most easterly point, Punta Rasa , is home to an Estacion de Investigaciones Biologicas, where birds are ringed and their patterns of migration tracked. An excellent spot for bird-watching, Punta Rasa is most easily reached by taxi, though the bus to Bahia Aventura will take you to within 10km of the site. To the west of Punta Rasa is Bahia Aventura (Jan & Feb daily 10am-8pm; March-June & Aug-Oct Fri, Sat & Sun 10am-6pm; July daily 10am-6pm; Nov & Dec daily 10am-7pm; $7; tel 02252/423000). Set in the grounds around Faro San Antonio, one of the oldest lighthouses on the Atlantic coast, Bahia Aventura is best described as a kind of educational theme-park, its well-kept walkways seemingly designed to keep nature at bay. The park does provide information at its visitor centre on the surrounding habitat, however, and its vegetation and wildlife, such as the espatula rosada or roseate spoonbill, a bird whose livid pink plumage outdoes even the flamingo. Look out, to, for cuis in the park, a small rodent common throughout Argentina. There are excellent views over Punta Rasa and the Bahia Samborombon from the top of the lighthouse. To get to the site, take bus #500 or #502 from Avenida San Martin. This area is also home to one of the few remaining groups of pampa deer, native deer whose numbers were severely reduced with the introduction of agriculture to the region as well as by hunting and far outnumbered these days by the European red deer. A hundred or so of these deer are protected in the Reserva Campos del Tuyu , to the west of Bahia Aventura, but access is severely restricted and will probably only be conceded to those with conservation credentials.
