The busiest section of the Atlantic coast is that lying between San Clemente del Tuyu , some 260km southeast of La Plata, and Mar del Plata, another 200km or so south. The many resorts in this section are connected by the RP11, known as the Interbalnearia , as it connects the region's balnearios or resorts. The route from La Plata runs southeast along RP36, which takes you through flat pampa landscape, dotted with cows and divided at intervals by tree-lined drives announcing the presence of estancias. Tall metal wind pumps, which extract water from beneath the surface of the land, inject a little drama into the scene, whilst giant cardoon thistles - a desiccated brown in summer - sprout in clusters like outsize bouquets. The RP36 joins up with the RP11 some 90km southeast of La Plata, which continues due south for another 100km before swinging east to San Clemente. On the coast, sand dunes predominate around Pinamar and Villa Gesell , whilst the first real hills surface just north of Mar del Plata , another 70km south of Villa Gesell.
