Some 50km south of Azul, along the RP80, the Monasterio de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles - Latin America's first Trappist monastery - lies in the region known as Boca de las Sierras, a gentle pass through Azul's low, undulating sierras. The monastery's Sunday Masses (10am) are popular with visitors as well as inhabitants of the surrounding area and the monks also accept guests for spiritual retreats. The retreats run from Tuesday to Friday, and from Friday to Tuesday, and reservations must be made in writing to the monastery: Monasterio Trapense, CC 34, (7300) Azul, Pcia de Buenos Aires. Women are accepted only in groups of four. About 5km further along the same road, the tiny village of PABLO ACOSTA has a charming almacen, a traditional country store and bar. There are no marked trails through the surounding sierras and exploring the area entails scrambling over rocks and pushing your way through shoulder-high pampas grass. Note also that the military has an explosives range, Fanazul, just to the north of the monastery and exploring the area unsupervised is not recommended. Check with Azul's tourist office for details of accompanied visits and other excursions , including horseriding .
