Namadgi National Park occupies almost half of the ACT, largely made up of wilderness areas in the west and southwest. Its mountain ranges and high plains, rising to 1900m, have a far more severe climate than low-lying Canberra and give rise to the Cotter River and many smaller streams. In the northwest, the Corin Road leads to Corin Dam, while in the south the partly surfaced Bobyan Road cuts right through the national park, emerging beneath the Snowy Mountains in the south (the park abuts the Kosciuszko National Park along the state border). There are picnic grounds and bush campsites by the Orroral River and near Mount Clear in the south. The Namadgi Visitors Information Centre , 3km south of Tharwa on the Naas Road (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm, Sat, Sun & holidays 9am-4.30pm; tel 02/6207 2900 or in emergency call ranger on 02/6281 5878), has displays and videos about the park, and also provides guided tours on request as well as detailed information on bushwalking tracks and emergency shelters in the remote areas.
