Adelaide is very much the transport hub of the state, with all routes radiating from the city. There are good bus connections throughout the southeast, but more rewarding alternatives are worth considering. Much of the country is flat and great for cycling . The principal route is the Mawson Trail : 800km specifically planned for cyclists, extending from the Mount Lofty Ranges through the Barossa Valley and traversing the Flinders Ranges to the Outback town of Blinman. Walkers can follow a parallel route along the 1500-kilometre Heysen Trail starting at Cape Jervis and running up the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula before heading north over the Mount Lofty Ranges to the Flinders, on the same tracks some of the way. Note that the Heysen trail is closed between December and April - partly due to the high risk of fire and partly as a result of an agreement with private landowners, through whose property some of the trail passes. Further information and maps for the trails are available from Information SA in Adelaide.
