The central section of the Gold Coast lacks any real focus. Haphazardly developed and visually unattractive, it exists very much in the shadow of Surfers Paradise, but can't match its intensity. The highway is just a continuous maze of crowded, multi-lane traffic systems and drab buildings which lose momentum the further south you drive, but once you leave the road there are fine beaches, two wildlife sanctuaries and - unbelievable amid all the commotion and noise - Burleigh Heads' tiny national park which preserves the coast's original environment.
