South Stradbroke Island is a twenty-kilometre-long, narrow strip of sand, separated from North Stradbroke Island by the 1896 cyclone and, as apartment buildings edge closer, doomed to become an extension of the Gold Coast. For now, though, Stradbroke's relatively isolated and quiet beaches offer something of an escape from the mainland, though most day-trippers come over simply to get plastered in the bar at South Stradbroke Island Resort (tel 07/5577 3311; rooms $70-90, cabins $115-150). Alternatively, the new Couran Cove Resort (tel 07/5597 9000, www.couran.com ; cabins and rooms $150 and upwards) offers a much more exclusive atmosphere, and doesn't welcome day-guests. There's also fine surf to enjoy along the southeast shore (though local surfies are notoriously protective), along with fishing in the Jumpinpin Channel between here and North Stradbroke. Day-cruises to the resort cost around $66 including lunch, with evening booze cruises about $55; operators include Island Queen and Jetaway (tickets and departure details from The Hut information booth, corner of Ferny and Cavill avenues; tel 07/5538 3400). A cheaper alternative ($22) is the resort ferry (10.30am-4.30pm; Runaway Bay Marina, 5km north of Surfers on Bayview St, but no public transport).
