All the major settlements along the Townsville to Lawn Hill route are mining towns , spaced so far apart that precise names are redundant: Mount Isa becomes "the Isa", Cloncurry "the Curry", Charters Towers "the Towers", as if nowhere else existed. Scattered across the vast tracts between are geological treasures waiting to be discovered, as well as traces of those who've tried before, and with a 4WD or careful manoeuvring there's plenty to see as you head interstate. Most people never stop to find out, grimly tearing along as fast as possible between Townsville and Three Ways along the Flinders / Barkly Highway . It's a shame, because even if time is limited and you're relying on public transport, Charters Towers' century-old feel and Mount Isa's strange setting are worth a stopover. With the freedom of your own vehicle, there's untramped bush at the Great Basalt Wall and Porcupine Gorge and the spectacular oasis of Lawn Hill Gorge , all a lifetime away from the coast's often banal spirit. With the highway forming the main link between Queensland and the Northern Territory, the major bus lines have at least daily services interstate, or there's the twice-weekly Inlander train between Townsville and Mount Isa.
