Heading west from Rockhampton, the Capricorn and Landsborough highways run through the heart of central Queensland to Winton and, ultimately, Mount Isa. There's a lot to see here: just a couple of hours from the coast, there's magical scenery atop the forested, sandstone plateau of the Blackdown Tablelands ; while the town of Emerald offers the chance of seasonal farm work, as well as a gateway to Carnarvon Gorge and the Gemfield's sapphire mines . Continuing inland, both Barcaldine and Longreach are historically important towns, the latter hosting the archetypal Outback museum in the Stockman's Hall of Fame . For its part, Winton sits surrounded by a timeless, harsh orange landscape, unexpectedly imprinted with a dramatic set of dinosaur footprints at Lark Quarry . Buses connect Rockhampton with Winton, and all main-town settlements west of Barcaldine are also on the Brisbane-Mount Isa bus run. Alternatively, you can catch the twice-weekly Spirit of the Outback train from Rockhampton as far as Longreach.
