Kings Canyon is 320km southwest of Alice Springs, of which the hundred-kilometre section from the Stuart Highway turn-off towards Stockyard Homestead/Wallara is unsealed. From Stockyard, it's bitumen all the way to the Watarrka National Park which envelopes Kings Canyon. You can also get to Kings Canyon the back way along the Mereenie Loop Track from Hermannsburg, a distance of around 260km. You'll need a $2 permit from Alice's tourist information, Glen Helen Lodge or reception at the Kings Canyon resort (if you're returning to Alice via the Mereenie). If you're heading straight down the Track there's an increasingly barren run of nearly 700km to Coober Pedy (itself no oasis) in South Australia. Most tours of two days or more departing from Alice include Kings Canyon on their see-it-all itineraries, providing the easiest and cheapest way to enjoy the canyon. There are daily McCafferty's and Greyhound Pioneer bus services from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon, or from Ayers Rock Resort with AAT Kings.
