Bus #257. The bush backdrop provided by Middle Head lends Balmoral Beach , on Hunters Bay, the peaceful secluded air that makes it so popular with families. There's something very Edwardian and genteel about palm-filled, grassy Hunters Park and its bandstand, which is still used for Sunday jazz concerts or even Shakespeare recitals in summer. The civilized air is added to by the pretty white-painted Bathers Pavilion at the northern end, now converted into a salubrious restaurant/cafe. There are really two beaches at Balmoral, separated by the island-like Rocky Point , a noted picnicking spot reached by a decorative footbridge. The low-key esplanade has some takeaway shops, a quiet cafe, an excellent fish-and-chip shop, and a fine bottle shop. South of Rocky Point, the "baths" - actually a netted bit of beach with a boardwalk and lanes for swimming laps - have been here in one form or another since 1899; you can rent sailboards, catamarans and take lessons from the neighbouring boat shed . The hillside houses overlooking Balmoral have some of the highest price tags in Sydney: for a stroll through some of this, head for Chinamans Beach , via Hopetoun Avenue and Rosherville Road.
