Cronulla CityRail. On the ocean side of the Kurnell Peninsula is Sydney's longest beach: the ten-kilometre stretch begins at Cronulla and continues as deserted, dune-backed Wanda Beach . This is prime surfing territory - and the only Sydney beach accessible by train. Like Manly, Cronulla has both sheltered bay beaches and ocean frontage, situated as it is on a finger of land jutting into Port Hacking . Its modern residential and commerical developments can give it the feel of a Gold Coast resort but at heart it's just a down-to-earth outer suburb. There are no trendies here, though with the recent opening of a purpose-built YHA hostel , travellers are starting to be added into the mix. Life revolves around the beaches and the shopping strip on Cronulla Street ; the train station is at its southern end, along with some interesting shops and two hip young cafe-bars, Voodoo Lounge and Nulla Nulla , the latter with cheaper drinks and internet access. Serious surfing is done at the main beach, North Cronulla , straight down Kingsway. Follow the concreted walkway, The Esplanade , south along the rock platform and past a couple of delightful sea pools to reach the smaller, more sheltered and less developed South Cronulla beach, backed by shady Cronulla Park. Right on the water, next to the Cronulla Sports Complex , the Cronulla Kios k is a magical spot for breakfast or lunch, while the unpretentious Cronulla RSL Memorial Club nearby has stunning ocean views from its wall-to-ceiling windows, which can be enjoyed with a cheap drink or meal. Keep following The Esplanade right around to Darook Park on sheltered Gunnamatta Bay , where you can catch a ferry to Bundeena in the Royal National Park from the Tonkin Street Wharf (Tonkin Street is just behind the train station).
