Sydney's mostly unattractive western suburbs cover the flat plains heading to the Blue Mountains, the ultimate destination of most westward travellers . The city's first successful farming area, Parramatta , has a cluster of historic buildings not swallowed up by development, and at the foothills of the mountains, Penrith offers river cruises on the Nepean River. The southern suburbs of Sydney have pockets of beauty and interest at La Perouse and Botany Bay National Park , and a superb surf beach at Cronulla .
