Dee Why: bus #136. Collaroy: bus #151, #155 or #157, bus #183 or #187-190. Narabeen: bus #183. Newport: bus #187. Immediately north of the long stretch of North Steyne Beach at Manly, Freshwater , sitting snugly between two rocky headlands on Queenscliff Bay, is one of the most picturesque of the northern beaches. There's plenty of surf culture around the headland at Curl Curl , and a walking track at its northern end, commencing from Huston Parade, will take you above the rocky coastline to the curve of Dee Why Beach . Dee Why provides consistently good surf, while its sheltered lagoon makes it popular with families. Beyond the lagoon, windsurfers gather around Long Reef , where the point is surrounded by a wide rock shelf creviced with rock pools and protected as an aquatic reserve - well worth a wander to peek at the creatures within. The long, beautiful sweep of Collaroy Beach , with its popular YHA , shades into Narrabeen Beach , an idyllic spot backed by the extensive, swimmable Narrabeen Lakes , a favourite with anglers and families; there's a good campsite by the lakes. Beyond Narrabeen, Mona Vale is a long, straight stretch of beach with a large park behind and a sea pool dividing it from sheltered Bongin Bongin Bay , whose headland reserve and rocks to clamber on make it ideal for children. Inland from Mona Vale at Ingleside, the domed Baha'i Temple on Mona Vale Road (daily 9am-5pm; www.bahai.org ; bus #195, #196, #285), set in extensive native gardens, is one of only seven in the world; the Baha'i faith teaches the unity of religion, and Sunday services (11am) read from texts of the world's main religions. After Bongin Bongin Bay, the Barrenjoey Peninsula begins, with calm Pittwater on its western side and ocean beaches running up its eastern side until it spears into Broken Bay. Newport boasts a fine stretch of ocean beach between two rocky headlands; on Sunday crowds gather to listen to live jazz in the beer garden of the Newport Arms on Kalinya Street, overlooking Heron Cove on Pittwater. Unassuming Bilgola Beach , next door to Newport, is one of the prettiest of the northern beaches.
