Avalon Beach & Palm Beach: bus #190 or #L90. Whale Beach: bus #193. From Bilgoga Beach, a trio of Sydney's best beaches, for both surf and scenery, runs up the eastern fringe of the mushroom-shaped Barrenjoey Peninsula: Avalon and Whale Beach - popular surfie territory - are less fashionable than Palm Beach, at the tip. Backed by bush-covered hills, and reached by 3km of winding road, small Avalon Beach has a suitably secluded feel and is indeed a slice of paradise on a summer's day. A pleasing set of shops and eateries run perpendicular from the beach on Avalon Parade: Macabar at no. 23 is a good licensed cafe with live music on Saturday nights - it's popular with the travellers who stay nearby at the marvellous hostel . Avalon Beach memorably rejected the proposed filming of a series of Baywatch in early 1999, though it did feature in a tacky Baywatch special. Whale Beach , 8km further north via Barrenjoey Road and Whale Beach Road, is much less of a settlement, with the beach fronted by the inevitable Surf Life Saving Club and the classy De Beers Restaurant . You can continue north following Whale Beach Road to reach Palm Beach , a hangout for the rich and famous, with expensive real estate perched in bushland above the beach. You can even get here by Hollywood-style seaplane from Rose Bay . Palm Beach residents aren't as concerned about the film cameras as their Avalon neighbours: the eponymous ocean beach, on the western side of the peninsula, leads a double life as "Summer Bay" in the famous Aussie soap Home and Away , with the Barrenjoey Lighthouse and headland regularly in shot. Collaroy YHA offer a phenomenally popular "Summer Bay" location tour. Beside the Palm Beach ferry wharf - which has regular departures to the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park - is calm Snapperman Beach, fronted by yachts and a shady park, while across the road is the Barrenjoey Boathouse , an upmarket guesthouse and restaurant. For less cash, try the excellent milk bar serving cheap fish and chips, hamburgers and good sandwiches. There are a few interesting shops to to browse in too, offering Indian clothes and accessories, funky second-hand furniture and women's clothing.
