Haberfield: A Federation Suburb
Immediately west of Leichhardt, between Parramatta Road and Iron Cove on the Parramatta River, lies the entirely planned suburb of Haberfield . "Slum-less, Lane-less, and Pub-less" was the vision of the post-Federation developers; the new nation was to have the ultimate urban environment. The style of the 1500 homes, all designed by the architect J. Spencer-Stanfield, is a classic Australian confection called Federation Style , which spread around the country from 1901. Eminently suited to the climate, the houses are a pleasing combination of the functional - wide verandahs that allow cooling breezes to circulate - with the fanciful, such as attics and turrets. Stained glass is an important decorative element, often with very Australian motifs of kookaburras and native flowers or flowing Art Nouveau designs. Elaborate chimneys, fretted woodwork, and gables and eaves are other key features. Every Spencer-Stanfield house in Haberfield is different, so you can easily spend a fascinating afternoon wandering its tranquil, leafy streets. You still won't find a pub, but the many Italians who have moved to the area have opened up cafes, restaurants and delis, concentrated on Ramsay Road and Dalhousie Street. To get there , take bus #436 from Circular Quay or George Street in the city centre, or walk from Ashfield CityRail.
