West of the centre, immediately beyond Darling Harbour, the inner-city areas of Glebe and Newtown surround Sydney University, their vibrant cultural mix enlivened by large student populations. On a peninsula north of Glebe and west of The Rocks, Balmain comprises a gentrified working-class dock area popular for its village atmosphere, while en route Leichhardt is the focus of Sydney's Italian community.
