Just beyond Surry Hills, and only 2km from the glitter and sparkle of Darling Harbour, Redfern is Sydney's squalid underbelly. Around the Eveleigh Street area , Australia's biggest urban Aboriginal community lives in "the Block" , a streetscape of derelict terraced houses and rubbish-strewn streets not far from Redfern train station - the closest Sydney has to a no-go zone. The Aboriginal Housing Company, set up as a co-operative in 1973, has been unable to pay for repairs and renovation work, in shocking contrast to Paddington's cutesy restored terraces and the harbourview mansions of Sydney's rich and beautiful. Recently the Company began knocking down derelict houses and relocating people, which has upset many residents who want to keep the community together.
