The artistic side of Surry Hills can be experienced at the Brett Whitely Studio , at 2 Raper St, off Davies Street. Whitely was one of Australia's best-known contemporary painters with an international reputation by the time he died of a heroin overdose at the age of 53; wild self-portraits and expressive female nudes were some of his subjects, but it is his sensual paintings of Sydney Harbour for which he is best known, painted from his home in Lavender Bay. In 1986 Whitely converted this one-time factory into a studio and living space, and since his death it has become a museum and gallery showing his paintings and memorabilia.
