To the east of the city centre, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Paddington were once rather scruffy working-class suburbs, but since the 1970s have been gentrified by the young, arty and upwardly mobile. Kings Cross is home to Sydney's red-light district as well as many of its tourists, and can be reached by a series of steps from Woolloomooloo and the busy naval dockyards, or by walking straight up William Street from Hyde Park past east Sydney. Further east, the "Cross" fades into the more elegant neighbourhoods of Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay, which trade on their harbour views
