Town Hall CityRail. In the realm of architectural excess the Town Hall is king - you'll find it next door to the QVB on George Street, at the corner of Druitt Street. It was built during the boom years of the 1870s and 1880s as a homage to Victorian England, and has a huge 8500-pipe organ inside its Centennial Hall, giving it the air of a secular cathedral. Throughout the interior different styles of ornamentation compete for attention in a riot of colour and detail; the splendidly dignified toilets are a must-see. Concerts and theatre performances set off the splendid interior perfectly (details on tel 9265 9007). The Town Hall steps are the traditional place to meet in Sydney, an easy reference point for city outings and romantic trysts, and there's plenty of people-watching opportunities as you sit on the steps and wait for your date.
