The stately Queen Victoria Building , in the block between George and York streets, is another example of Sydney's finest architecture - but this hasn't stopped Sydneysiders, with characteristic disrespect, from abbreviating it to the QVB. Originally built as a market hall in 1898, the restored QVB was reopened as an upmarket shopping arcade in 1986, its four levels becoming progressively upmarket from the basement up. The interior is magnificent, with its beautiful woodwork, mosaic-tiled floors, elevated walkways and antique lifts; in true republican spirit Charles I is beheaded on the hour, every hour, by figurines on the ground-floor mechanical clock. From Town Hall Station you can walk right through the basement level (mainly bustling food stalls) and continue via the Sydney Central Plaza to Grace Bros department store, emerging on the Pitt Street Mall without having to go outside - very cooling on a hot day.
