Martin Place or St James CityRail. Bus #441. Mrs Macquaries Road, built in 1816 at the urging of the governor's wife, Elizabeth, curves down from Art Gallery Road to Mrs Macquaries Point, which separates idyllic Farm Cove from the grittier Woolloomooloo Bay. At the end is the celebrated lookout point known as Mrs Macquaries Chair , a seat fashioned out of the rock, from which Elizabeth could admire her favourite view of the harbour on her daily walk in what was then the governor's private park. On the route down to Mrs Macquaries Point, the Andrew "Boy" Charlton Pool is an open-air, saltwater swimming pool safely isolated from the harbour waters on the Woolloomooloo side of the promontory, with excellent views across to the engrossingly functional Garden Island Naval Depot. It's handy if you're staying in King's Cross: descend the McElhone Stairs from Victoria Street (via Woolloomooloo).
