Martin Place or St James CityRail. Bus #441. The Domain is a large, quite plain, open space that stretches from behind the historic precinct on Macquarie Street to the waterfront, divided from the Botanic Gardens by the Cahill Expressway and Mrs Macquaries Road. Filled with workers eating sandwiches under shady Moreton Bay fig trees, playing volleyball, or even swimming at its outdoor pool, it's a popular place for a stroll from the city across to the Art Gallery of New South Wales or down to the harbour for wonderful views from Mrs Macquaries Chair. In the early days of the settlement, The Domain was the governor's private park but for many more years it has been a truly public site, as Sydney's focus for anti-establishment protests. Since the 1890s, assorted cranks and soapbox revolutionaries have assembled on Sundays for the city's version of Speakers' Corner , and huge crowds have registered their disquiet, notably during anti-conscription rallies in 1916 and after the Whitlam Labor government's dismissal in 1975. Every January thousands of people gather on the lawns to enjoy the wonderful free open-air concerts of the Sydney Festival , and in February the Tropfest short film festival takes over the grass.
