St James or Martin Place CityRail. North up College Street is Catholic St Mary's Cathedral , overlooking the northeast corner of Hyde Park. The huge Gothic-style church opened in 1882, though the foundation stone was laid in 1821. In 1999 the cathedral at last gained the twin stone spires originally planned for the two southern towers by architect William Wardell in 1865, with AU$8 million of the project funded by State and Federal governments. The cathedral also gained an impressive new forecourt - a pedestrianized terrace with fountains and pools - with the consolidation of two traffic-isolated parks into the large Cook and Phillip Park , which includes a recreation centre and vegetarian restaurant. The remodelling also created a green link to The Domain.
