24hr access. St James or Museum CityRail. From Queens Square, St James's Church (daily 9am-5pm ) marks the entry to Hyde Park ; the Anglican church, completed in 1824, is Sydney's oldest place of worship. It was one of Macquarie's schemes built to ex-convict Greenway's design, and the architect originally planned it as a courthouse - you can see how the simple design has been converted into a graceful church. Behind St James Station, the Archibald Fountain commemorates the association of Australia and France during World War I; near here, just behind the entrance to St James Station, is a giant chess set where you can challenge the locals to a game. Further south the Sandringham Memorial Gardens also commemorate Australia's war dead, but the most potent monument is the Anzac Memorial (daily 9am-5pm; free daily tours 11.30am & 1.30pm ) across Park Street in the southern end of the park. Fronted by the tree-lined Pool of Remembrance, the 30m-high cenotaph, unveiled in 1934, is classic Art Deco right down to the detail of Raynor Hoff's stylized soldier figures solemnly decorating the exterior. Downstairs, a free, mainly photographic, exhibition looks at Australian wartime experiences.
