Frantic redevelopment is taking place at Pyrmont , the former industrial suburb jutting out into the water between Darling Harbour and Blackwattle Bay. Pyrmont was Sydney's answer to Ellis Island in the 1950s when thousands of immigrants disembarked at Pier 13, then the city's main overseas passenger terminal. Today the suburb, which had a population of only nine hundred in 1988, is in the process of being transformed into a residential suburb of twenty thousand with AU$2 billion worth of investment. The area has certainly become glitzier, with the Star City Casino, and two TV companies - Channel Ten and Foxtel - now based here. The approach to the spectacularly cabled Anzac Bridge (complete with statue of an Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldier) - Sydney's newest - cuts through Pyrmont and saves between fifteen and twenty minutes' travelling time to Sydney's inner west.
