Immediately west of Central Station on either side of the downmarket end of George Street is the area known as Haymarket . The Light Rail heads through here from Central Station, past Capitol Square and the Capitol Theatre : built as a de luxe picture palace in the 1920s, the theatre now hosts big-budget musicals and ballet under a star-studded ceiling representing the southern skies. The surrounding area is renowned for its pop culture pleasures, with the ugly concrete bunker of the Sydney Entertainment Centre , the city's mainstream concert venue , on the other side of Chinatown .
